The Aggrameter utilizes the latest microwave and microprocessor technology to measure moisture content in various fine and coarse-grained materials. The prongs of the probe are inserted into the material to be tested and the percentage of moisture content is instantaneously shown on the easy to read display. The Aggrameter comes calibrated for both sand and aggregate, and can be programmed by the user for up to ten different materials. The Aggrameter can store more than 150 readings – complete with time and date for future reference.
The pycnometer is applied where there is an interest in knowing the specific weight.
Limitation: Temperature variations influence the measurements (can be prevented by climate control in the laboratory).
The manufacturing of these materials are required to meet standards set by ASTM and AASHTO to ensure that they fall within established limits and characteristics. Bituminous materials used in pavement require a much higher ductility than those used for less demanding applications, such as waterproofing or crack filling.
The Dean Stark moisture test apparatus is used to determine the water content in petroleum products, tars, emulsified asphalts and other bituminous materials by the distillation method. The distillation process allows the water in the test sample to be isolated and collected in the receiver of the trap. Dean Stark moisture test apparatus are available in both electric and gas configurations. Gas distillation traps can also be used to determine levels of volatile distillates.
Atterberg Limits (Liquid Limit Testing)
Liquid limit testing determines the water content at which soil changes from a liquid to a plastic state. It is determined using the devices on this page. To perform, a soil sample is placed into the cup of the liquid limit machine and separated into two halves using a grooving tool. The crank on the machine is then rotated so that the cup holding the sample strikes the base of the test machine. The number of blows is recorded until the two halves flow together and close the groove.

he ergonomic hand auger set for heterogeneous soils is used to carry out manual drilling and sampling in a great variety of different soils in an ergonomically sound way. It is particularly suitable for general soil investigation (description of the layering, geology, archaeology) as well as taking samples for such activities as environmental research. It can carry out drillings to a depth of 5 metres, depending on the depth of the groundwater, the build-up of the soil and the nature of the material to be drilled into.
For every type of soil above or under the groundwater table there is an auger type that is specifically suited to that situation. During the drilling process changes can be made from one type of auger to another without any problems.
Extensions can be added to the soil drilling system adding 50 cm with each additonal piece, which is also the difference in height of the working area.
The calcimeter by Eijkelkamp Soil & Water is suitable for the simultaneous determination of the carbonate content in 5 samples. Where possible the vulnerable glass was replaced by synthetic materials. Because hydrochloric acid is used a stable and ergonomic design was chosen. The calcimeter is delivered complete with reaction vessels and test tubes (without reagents).
Per reaction approximately one hour is required. Carbonates that are hard to dissolve, such as sea shells, take more reaction time.
The quantity of sample needed is determined beforehand by treating a part of the sample with hydrochloric acid on a watch glass. The carbonate content is estimated on the basis of the extend and the period of bubbling. Based on this estimate the quatity of sample for the analysis is determined.
With this calcimeter no balloon is used to keep the CO2 separate from the water (to prevent any gas from dissolving in the water). This results in much more accurate measuring results.
As a consequence of the repeatability and the accuracy, a series of measurements should be executed in a room in which there are no differences in temperature exceeding 4°C. In addition the reagents used must meet the standards for analysis. It should also be considered that other gasses (for instance in polluted soils) may be released. The gas will then have to be purified first and the CO2 will have to be determined otherwise.

The shear strength or stress of the soil depends on different soil characteristics such as for instance: the granular composition, the humus content, the humidity and (in case of vegetation covered areas) the degree of coverage and the density of the roots. In order to determine the shear stress in the strata in for instance a profile pit, on the surface (for instance a sports terrain), at the bottom of a borehole or in a sample, several different shear stress meters have been developed.
The principle of the shear stress meters is simple: an axle with vanes (or fins) connected to it is placed in the soil vertically after which it is turned around with a certain speed and force. The force required is measured at the breakpoint of the soil and from this the shear stress at the location of the measuring point can be calculated. Depending on the type of soil different vanes can be applied.
The field inspection vane tester can be used to determine the maximum shearing force that can be exercised on a soil. Measurement in the field (on the surface, in profile pits or at the bottom of bore holes) as well as in the laboratory (on samples) are possible.
The shear stress measured can be read on a clearly readable scale ring. In soft soils it is not necessary to make a borehole first. In order to determine the friction on the extension rods a dummy vane is available in these situations.

For determining flakiness index. Particle is flaky when its thickness (smallest dimension) is less than 0.6 of the mid-size of the sieve fraction. Gauge has seven, labeled slots for manual evaluation of particles in the seven openings. The mass of all flaky particles (passing appropriate slots) as percent of the sample is the flakiness index. Gauge is enameled sheet metal with clearly marked sieve fraction ranges for each slot.

In principle it is possible to design the soil water permeameters in any required size. The size is determined by the number of soil samples of which the saturated water permeability is to be determined simultaneously. Designs for 5 up to 25 soil sample rings can be supplied. The permeameters are available for soil sample rings with an external diameter of 53 or 60 mm.
A closed or an open system can be applied. In case of a closed system a storage cistern, a circulation pump and a filter are provided. If an open system is applied these attributes are not needed, as in this case the setup allows a connection to the main water supply and drainage to take place in a washing basin.
A closed system offers the facility to measure other fluids than water from the main water supply. In case of samples from a salty environment, for instance, salt needs to be added to the water.

The sample can then be remolded and the test repeated. As the moisture content falls due to evaporation, the thread will begin to break apart at larger diameters. The plastic limit is defined as the moisture content where the thread breaks apart at a diameter of 3.2 mm (about 1/8 inch). A soil is considered non-plastic if a thread cannot be rolled out down to 3.2 mm at any moisture possible.
Used to determine the percentage of bitumen in a paving mixture using hot solvent extraction. Available in 1000g and 2000g versions.

The standard set for pF-determination pF 0 - 2.0 (0 - 0.1 bar) consists of the sandbox with control panel, suction levelling stand, water supply bottle with stand, filter cloth (140-150 micron), a number of containers synthetic sand, grain size approximately 73 micron and various accessories.
A maximum of 40 soil sample rings can be placed on the sandbox. The samples that are measured are taken using soil sample rings. These rings usually have a contents of 100 cc. In addition to the standard set a soil sample ring kit must be available as well as cases with soil sample rings and aluminum soil sample boxes. For the determination of the pF the laboratory should also be equipped with a balance and a drying oven. The table on which the instrument is placed should be level and isolated against vibration. Before measuring of the moisture tension can commence the different parts must be mounted and the drain must be fitted with a filter cloth.
Subsequently the sandbox is filled in the proper manner with water and synthetic sand (the sand should not contain any air- or water pockets). If everything has been executed in accordance with the operating instructions the saturated samples in the soil sample rings can be placed in the sandbox and the moisture tension is determined of the completely saturated sample. Next subsequently larger suction is applied. Weighing the sample each time after the balance is set again yields the moisture content that goes with each moisture tension.
If the sandbox is inundated with water after each test it can remain in operation during several years. A copper ring prevents algal growth.

The Series 2000 Speedy® moisture tester is a portable system for measuring the moisture content of a wide range of materials including soils, aggregates, dust and powders (and liquids). The system consists of a low pressure vessel fitted with a pressure gauge and an electronic scale and test accessories. Moisture measurements are made by mixing a weighed sample of the material with a calcium carbide reagent in the sealed pressure vessel. The reagent reacts chemically with water in the sample, producing acetylene gas that in turn increases the pressure within the vessel. The pressure increase in the vessel is proportional to the amount of water in the sample, the moisture content can be read directly from the calibrated pressure gauge. The Speedy has an accuracy of 0.5% on most materials and the gauge can be calibrated from 0-20% moisture, based on wet weight. Test speeds range from 45 seconds to 3 minutes depending on material.
