Analytical Performance

The Buck 205 is a high energy, microprocessor controlled single beam atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Solid state electronics and simple optics provide the basis for our superior stability and sensitivity. The Ebert mount monochromator and user-selectable bandwidth give the system maximum flexibility. Our short-path dynamic nebulizer/burner configuration is highly efficient. An inert needle, precisely positioned in a high flow venturi, delivers sample to the corrosion proof impact bead. This results in a tremendously high nebulization effect for all types of sample matrices.

The AA-7000 series of Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometers features high-sensitivity analysis, flexible system configuration, and a compact footprint for user-friendly operation. In addition, the AA-7000 systems are the first AAs to employ a vibration sensor as standard. The AA-7000 series ensures efficient and comfortable operation in your laboratory.

The AA-7000 Series incorporates newly developed 3D double-beam optics. The optical system has been designed to produce its maximum performance for each measurement method through optimal adjustment of the light beam and light beam digital filter, and by using optical components that restrict light losses.

The 6400 Automatic Isoperibol Calorimeter represents the next evolutionary step in the Parr automated calorimeters. Inclusive and compact, the instrument incorporates a closed loop cooling subsystem into the calorimeter. This subsystem uses a thermoelectric cooler assembly attached directly to a one liter water tank which supplies cooling water to the calorimeter. An external nitrogen pressurized tank is used to supply rinse water to the calorimeter. This model features the fixed bomb and bucket design allowing for automated bucket and jacket fill as well as automated vessel fill and rinse. The 6400 requires one minute of operator time per test, allowing a technician to operate up to four calorimeters simultaneously.

Design Features

Parr Fixed Bomb and Bucket Technology

The 6400 Automatic Isoperibol Calorimeter uses a fixed bomb and bucket design where the bomb and bucket are not removed from the calorimeter during routine operations. This design concept has made it possible to offer unique levels of automation for the entire calorimetric determination not just the data collection and reporting steps. The result of this automation will save approximately five minutes of operator time per test when compared to any removable bomb calorimeter.

Oxygen Charging and Release

The fixed bomb and bucket design allow the oxygen supply to be directed into the head of the bomb at the beginning of each test. The head of these bombs incorporate a check valve which dynamically seals when the bomb is pressurized. At the end of the test, the gases in the bomb are automatically released while the calorimeter is being returned to its starting temperature.

Fixed Bucket

The bucket in these calorimeters has been designed to provide smooth circulation over the surface of the vessel. The design also repeatedly fills the bucket volumetrically. The bomb head closure seals the bucket at the same time the bomb is closed. This unique design minimizes the amount of water required for the test as well as permitting rapid, automatic and repeatable filling for each test. The water heated by the combustion is automatically drained from the bucket at the conclusion of the test and replaced with cooling water to bring the bomb and bucket rapidly back down to the starting temperature for the next test.

Fixed Bomb

The 6400 Calorimeter features the patented closure design of the Parr Fixed bombs. This design allows the user to seal and lock the head into the cylinder with simple one sixteenth turn. The main bomb seal is an o-ring optimized to minimize frictional wear, improving the lifetime of this seal. At the conclusion of the test the inside surface of the bomb is washed to remove the products of the combustion from the bomb. The automation of the bomb washing step eliminates one of the most tedious and time consuming manual operations required with removable bomb calorimeters. Besides the elimination of the drudgery of manually washing the bomb, a not so obvious advantage of the fixed bomb design is that the bomb is always washed as soon as the final temperature can be determined. Generally, this is within 4-5 minutes of the time the bomb is fired. This holds to an absolute minimum the time any acids produced by the combustion can attach to the inner surfaces of the bomb. This has improved the service life of these bombs in comparison to removable bombs.

1138 Oxygen Combustion Bomb

The 1138 oxygen bomb is the standard bomb in the 6400 calorimeter. The 1138 Oxygen Bomb has been redesigned to withstand a higher magnitude of tests. The head is designed with an O-ring groove which is optimized to minimize frictional wear, in turn improving the lifetime of the seal. The bomb head is removable for fast sample loading using the patented Quick Twist-Lock vessel closure design.

The bomb is made from alloy 20; a special niobium stabilized stainless steel selected for its resistance to the mixed nitric and sulfuric acids produced during the combustion process. The 1138CL is made from the halogen resistant Hastelloy G30™. Hastelloy 30™ is an alloy rich in cobalt and molybdenum and is able to resist the corrosive effects of free chlorine and halogen acids produced when burning samples with significant chlorine content. While no alloy will completely resist the corrosive atmospheres produced when burning samples containing halogen compounds, users who intend to test these materials are urged to select the 1138CL Bomb.

These bombs are 250 mL in volume and are rated to a working pressure of 2000 psi. The bombs are hydrostatically tested to 3000 psi and the sample range is ~1g releasing up to 8000 calories per test.

A1450DD Head

Users who wish to achieve maximum through-put with their 6400 calorimeters will want to purchase a spare A1450DD head for their calorimeter. This permits the next sample to be completely prepared and inserted into the bomb as soon as the current test is concluded.

Control Charts

A control chart is a graphical tool which can assist the user in determining whether or not their process is in control. Many standard methods will dictate that a reference sample be measured periodically and the results plotted on a graph. Limits for acceptable values are defined and the process is assumed to be in control as long as the results stay within these limits. Since results are expected to scatter with a normal distribution within established limits, systematic trends or patterns in the data plots may also be an early warning of problems. The 6400 calorimeter provides the user with the ability to instantaneously plot and view standard results with user defined warning and control limits.

The 6100 Calorimeter has been designed to provide the user with:

  • For users who do not require the highest attainable precision.
  • A traditional design calorimeter with removable oxygen bomb and bucket.
  • A high speed calorimeter capable of performing up to 7 tests per hour when equipped with two bombs and buckets.
  • A compact calorimeter requiring minimum laboratory bench space.
  • A modern intuitive graphical user interface for ease of operation and training.
  • A calorimeter with up to date digital hardware, software and communications capabilities.

Outwardly, the 6100 Calorimeter appears to be the same as the 6200 Isoperibol Calorimeter, since both calorimeters are built into the same housing with the same keyboard and LCD display panel. But, there is one important difference: the 6100 Calorimeter does not have a temperature controlled jacketing system as required for isoperibol calorimetry.

The 6100 Calorimeter is intended for the user who wants a modern calorimeter with the convenient automatic features provided in the 6200 Calorimeter and whose precision requirements can be met with a static system without isoperibol control. Or, for users whose work load is small or intermittent, making it preferable to purchase a lower cost model. To meet these criteria, the temperature controlled water jacket and its accessories have been removed from the 6200 Calorimeter and replaced in the 6100 with a static air jacket around the bucket chamber, comparable to the arrangement used in the 1341 Plain Calorimeter. This eliminates all water and water connections, resulting in a significant saving in cost. And, with no permanent external connections (except a connection to an oxygen tank). The 6100 Calorimeter can be set up and made ready to operate in a few minutes, or it can be set aside when not in use.

All sensors and controls in the 6100 Calorimeter are built into a single, compact cabinet to provide a self-contained operating unit consisting of:

  • An 1108P oxygen bomb with an oval bucket which fits into the jacket.
  • A built-in automatic system for charging the bomb with oxygen.
  • A high precision electronic thermometer.
  • A bright, color, touch screen display for data entry and operation control.
  • USB port for printer and balance communication
  • Ethernet port for computer and network (LAN) connections.
  • Removable SD memory card slots for simple program updates and test report archiving.

A variety of vessels are available for testing samples releasing from 52 calories to 12,000 calories per test.

Good Repeatability

The Parr 6100 Compensated Jacket Calorimeter continuously monitors the temperature surrounding the calorimeter and applies the necessary heat leak correction in real time. Despite the fact that it doesn’t have a temperature regulated water jacket found in traditional isoperibol calorimeters, the compensated jacket approach offers significant improvement over the traditional static jacket calorimeter. The application of the real-time jacket temperature to the heat leak correction avoids the long pre- and post- periods normally associated with static jacket calorimetry. In addition to achieving a rapid analysis, this technology allows the user to realize the precision required by the most frequently used standard test methods for commercial fuel testing.

As with all static jacket calorimeters, best results are obtained when the instrument is operated in a location where it is not subject to air drafts and fluctuating temperatures. The preferred operating environment is in a temperature controlled room (+/- 1 C). It is a well accepted principle of reliable analysis that any instrument calibration be checked regularly. The optimum frequency for checking the 6100 Calorimeter depends largely on the temperature stability of the operating environment. As general rule, the instrument calibration should be evaluated at least every tenth test. The calorimeter controller software conveniently offers both a graphical control chart approach in addition to an automatic rolling average calculation to support calibration maintenance and verification. Following the aforementioned guidelines and using reference samples, such as benzoic acid, the process sigma (precision classification) of the 6100 Calorimeter can be taken as 0.1%.

A Self-Contained Operating Unit

The 6100 Calorimeter is a compact operating unit that uses the same 1108 style oxygen bomb and oval bucket furnished with the 6200 or with the 1266 and 1356 previous models. It also has the same automatic oxygen filling system and high precision electronic thermometer used in the 6200 Calorimeter. There is a touch-panel keyboard for data entry and a color LCD display for operator prompts, status indication, data verification and report views. All steps in the test procedure are managed by a microprocessor control system programmed to operate the calorimeter in either the conventional equilibrium mode or in a faster dynamic mode. All data is handled automatically by a dedicated microcomputer.

Printed Reports

An optional 1758 Printer can be furnished with each 6100 Calorimeter to produce a permanent record of all activity within the calorimeter. Multiple Language Options Parr Model 6100 can be set to provide the programming options, operating menus, reports and error messages in the following choice of languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Chinese, Russian and Czech.

Model 6200 is a microprocessor controlled, isoperibol oxygen bomb calorimeter which is widely used for both routine and occasional calorific tests. It uses the time-tested Parr 1108 style oxygen bomb and oval bucket in a compact calorimeter, producing reliable results with good repeatability, but differing from the 6400 Model in that the bomb and bucket both must be removed from the calorimeter and refilled manually for each test, thereby requiring more of the operator’s time than the 6400 model.

All sensors, controls and jacketing in the 6200 Calorimeter are built into a single, compact cabinet to provide a self-contained operating unit consisting of:

  • A temperature-controlled water jacket with a built-in circulating system and an electric heater.
  • An 1108P oxygen bomb with an oval bucket which fits into the insulating water jacket.
  • A built-in automatic system for charging the bomb with oxygen.
  • A high precision electronic thermometer.
  • A bright, color, touch screen display for data entry and operation control.
  • Special communication ports for printer, computer and network (LAN) connections.
  • SD memory card slots for simple program updates and test report archiving.

A variety of vessels are available for testing samples releasing from 52 calories to 12,000 calories per test.

Precise Electronic Thermometry

Temperatures are measured with a high precision electronic thermometer using a specially designed thermistor sensor sealed in a stainless steel probe which is fixed in the calorimeter cover. Measurements are taken with 0.0001° resolution over a 20° to 40°C working range, with all readings shown in Celsius.

Effective Thermal Jacketing

Outstanding thermal jacketing is provided by a circulating water system driven by a built-in, high capacity pump which maintains a continuous forced flow around the sides and bottom of the bucket chamber and through the cover as well. The jacket temperature is held constant for isoperibol operation and no water additions or waiting periods are required at the end of a run. A sealed immersion heater and a built-in heat exchanger, both operated by the calorimeter controller, provide precise jacket temperature control.

A Reliable Oxygen Bomb

The Parr 1108P Oxygen Bomb furnished with the calorimeter will safely burn samples liberating up to 8000 calories per charge, using oxygen charging pressures up to 40 atm. An alternate 1108PCL bomb with superior resistance to chlorine and halogen acids is recommended for tests involving waste material and chlorinated samples.

A Built-In Oxygen Filling System

To speed and simplify the bomb filling operation, the 6200 Calorimeter has an automatic system for charging the bomb with oxygen. Oxygen from a commercial cylinder is connected to a microprocessor controlled solenoid installed in the calorimeter. To fill the bomb, the operator simply slips the filling hose connector onto the bomb inlet valve and pushes the touch screen to start the filling sequence. Filling then proceeds automatically at a controlled rate to a pre-set pressure.

Automatic Standardization

The 6200 Calorimeter will automatically generate its energy equivalent (EE) value from a series of standardization tests, calculating a mean value from an operator defined number of the last standardization tests for each bomb/ bucket combination. The default number of tests is 10 as specified by ASTM and international methods. The user can enter the maximum standard deviation he will accept and the calorimeter will advise him if his tests fail to meet this criteria. Energy equivalent values for up to four bomb/bucket combinations can be stored in the computer.

Many User Options

Although specific procedures are recommended, various options are available to the user:

  • Program parameters can be adjusted to accommodate unusual sample sizes and precision requirements.
  • The calorimeter can be programmed to accommodate any titrant concentrations selected by the user.
  • Calorific values can be reported in any of several measurement units.
  • The calorimeter program can be adjusted to compensate for the subtle differences in the way acid correction values are handled in ASTM, BS, DIN and ISO methods.
  • Program controls can be protected from inadvertent changes.
  • A bomb usage tally can be maintained to notify the user when each bomb should be serviced.

Multiple Language Options

Parr Model 6200 can be set to provide the programming options, operating menus, reports and error messages in the following choice of languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Chinese, Russian and Czech.

Automatic Data Transfer

The calorimeter is equipped with a USB port for reporting to a printer and receiving sample weights from an analytical balance. Transferring results to a laboratory computer is accomplished using an Ethernet connection using standard network protocols.

Compatible Modular Design

The 6200 Calorimeter is fully compatible with existing 1108 Parr Bombs and closed-circuit water handling systems making it easy to fit the instrument into an existing laboratory set-up.  A modular design, with the controller electronics assembled in a removable chassis, simplifies maintenance.

A Reliable Oxygen Bomb Calorimeter in a Plain Insulated Jacket for Occasional Calorific Tests

The 1341 Calorimeter is an improved version of a plain, static jacket, oxygen bomb calorimeter that has been made by Parr for more than eighty years. It is a reliable calorimeter that can be used for the same broad range of solid and liquid combustible samples as the 6000 Series. Its modest cost and simple design recommend it primarily for users whose work load does not justify the purchase of an automatic model. The calorimeter requires no permanent connections. It can be set up and ready to operate in a few minutes and, when not in use, can be disassembled easily and stores on a shelf.

Many Applications

The calorific value of any solid or liquid material that can be burned safely in an oxygen bomb can be determined in the 1341 Calorimeter. It is also an excellent instrument for teaching heat measurement techniques in a student laboratory since it provides all of the instrumentation needed for such tests, but with each element in the system reduced to fundamental forms. Although commonly called a ‘plain’ calorimeter because of its simple design, technically this is a static jacket instrument which operates at or near room temperature with no provision for controlling the jacket temperature. Compensation for any heat loss (or gain) during a test is made by applying a correction computed from heat leak measurements taken before and after each test. As a general rule, about 10 or 12 tests can be completed in an 8-hour day, whereas up to 55 tests can be run in the same period in a Parr automatic model.

Good Repeatability

Good repeatability can be obtained with the 1341 Calorimeter provided that the temperature rise and heat leak corrections are measured and applied carefully. Using the 6775 Digital Thermometer supplied with the instrument, standard deviations in a series of tests with a uniform sample such as benzoic acid should not exceed 0.3%. This repeatability can be reduced to 0.2% by using the Parr 6772 Calorimetric Thermometer.

Quality Construction

There has been no compromise with quality in selecting components for the moderately priced, 1341 Calorimeter. It is equipped with the same 1108 Oxygen Bomb furnished with Parr calorimeters for decades. An alternate 1108CL bomb with superior resistance to chlorine and halogen acids is available for tests involving waste materials and chlorinated solvents. The molded double wall jacket provides a simple yet effective insulating system that restricts heat flow between the calorimeter and its surroundings. Temperature readings are taken with a 6775 Digital Thermometer that has a working range of 10 to 40°C and a resolution of 0.001°C.
